Library is the New Place to Be

From the 1/12 article in A Lion’s Life
The Joseph Alexander Library at YUHSB, under the watchful eye of YUHSB Librarian Ms. Danielle Lewis, has been undergoing some radical changes this year. First of all, a plethora of exciting library-related projects are currently coming to fruition. One such project is the cataloging of the library’s 14,000+ books, DVDs and Seforim. Ms. Lewis and her Library Squad, as well as other students, have been working hard entering books into the library’s new computerized database. Due to their efforts, students will be able to borrow books, check books’ availability and access our library’s vast collection of E-books, databases, reserve materials, DVDs,and 10 new E-readers, through Renweb. Additionally, the library itself is currently being renovated, reorganized and expanded. Ms. Lewis and the Library Squad plan to resurrect the 3rd floor library area by cleaning it up a bit, as well as by adding various graphic novels, mysteries, manga, and young adult fiction – books that students will be excited to read for pleasure. Other print and online resources will include a larger collection of periodicals, study aids and college resources. Additionally, at the beginning of the year, the library staff finally installed the highly-awaited computers that students have been looking forward to since last year. Students are welcome to use the computers for school and extracurricular work. The computers have already been established as indispensable library resources. Students have used them to work on college essays with Ms. Lewis’ help, prepare class presentations and papers, and to do independent study. In other good news, a printer is on its way! We have just installed a flat screen for presentations, Skype, and interactive research workshops. This year, the library also received a diverse mix of fish, which undoubtedly add to the library’s status as the place to be in YUHSB. Furthermore, the library continues to serve as a community hub for YUHSB’s students. It continues to serve as a Beis Medrash, as well as a meeting space for Honors College, Tikvah, Debates, Names Not Numbers, special programs and lectures, team and club meetings, faculty discussions and meeting, as well as class review sessions. The library itself also sponsors two clubs: The MTA Book and Film Club and Library Squad. Whatever students can do, whether it be donating books or helping to keep the space clean, helps the library serve MTA students. Ms. Lewis would like all students to know that the library is here for their benefit. She looks forward to working withthe YUHSB community to continue to make the Joseph Alexander Library the ultimate place to be.
